My Little Pony Funko Mystery Minis - Mini Review

When I saw the first images of these Funko Mystery Minis, I was very skeptical. I thought it was kind of cheap to take a figure you already produce, shrink it down a bit, and cover it in black paint. Where was the appeal?

Then YouTube happened. I swear I buy more stuff because of online videos than any conventional marketing techniques. I watched multiple unboxing videos, people's collections being completed, how bright and colorful the pony's hair was....and I wanted them.

Bad.

When Christmas rolled around, a full case was pre-ordered online and I waited in eager anticipation. Long story short, the arrival date kept getting pushed back month by month so the order was cancelled. I still REALLY wanted these figures, so we made a trip to the mall (Ugh. I don't know how I spent so much of my teenage years in malls. They're really terrible.) to grab some blind boxes from Hot Topic. They were having a sale, so my boyfriend and I got 2 figures a piece and went back to the parking lot to open them in the car. I wanted Spitfire (and Phillip wanted everyone BUT Spitfire). In a cruel twist of fate, both of Phillip's boxes contained...wait for it...Spitfire! I ended up with Dr. Whooves and DJ-Pon3.

I really like these figures. The paintjobs are so much better than large FUNKO ponies (by a long shot), and the matte finish makes them seem a bit more of a collector's item than a normal toy.

Oh, Spitfire. Out of the two duplicates that we got, I picked out my favorite and gave the other to a Brony friend of mine. I LOVE this figure. The hair, wings, tail, and goggles are all so bright and eye-catching that there's no way to ignore this little lady. She has lightning bolts around her hooves and, of course, on her cutie mark. The paint job is neatly done, with clean lines and bright colors.

I'm not a huge fan of this character, but I do like her design. Her hair is nice and spikey and her glasses are a nice pink/purple gradient. D.J has a simple white music note for a cutie mark, which is on both sides.

Dr. Whooves (I still don't know how they got away with that) has really lovely, swooshy hair (Allons-y!) and bright blue eyes (although I do think he looks a bit sad). He also sports a crisp, white collar and a green tie. His cutie mark, like all of these figures, is on both sides of his derriere. He's super charming and I'm very pleased that he made into my collection.

I'm really happy with these little guys and do plan on purchasing more in this line!

A creative weekend (and Pokemon toys)!

So, I had a really good weekend.

Reasons.

1. I finally started to get over this super crummy sickness that I've had for over a week.
2. I got LOTS of sewing done (as well as some custom pony making)
3. I got new toys in the mail!
4. I started watching Attack on Titan. Holy deathballs.

Let's start with number 3.

How amazingly cute are these Pokemon Playsets?! I've been wanting to add these to my collection for a long time (and there are quite a few variations), but only recently bit the bullet and ordered them! They weren't particularly expensive, and they are all complete with the correct Pokemon. And a really cool thing? You can connect all the different playsets with the little bridges that they come with!

I won't embarrass myself by saying how long it took me to figure this out.

On a more creative front, I finished some fun projects this weekend as well!

I made my first custom My Little Pony! Yoshi seemed like an easy beginner project (no re-hairing) and I got him done in a Saturday. He was originally a G3 'Breezy' that I found at a thrift shop for a dollar. With a couple bottles of paint and some sculptey, he is MUCH cuter and much more 'me'.

I also whipped up some envelope backed pillow cases for some friends down the hall. They have a multitude of novelty tees and wanted some of them repurposed. I am also ashamed to say that these are the first things that I have sewn in months. MONTHS. The shame of it all...

Let's hope that this upcoming weekend is just as great!

Impulse Purchases.

So I'm a bit of a 'My Little Pony : Friendship is Magic' fan. You know, in a respectable twenty something, never going to grow up kind of way. I collect the trading cards, the toys (where is all the Big Mac merch?!), blind bag figures, etc. But then I saw the dog tags. DOG TAGS. What? Where the heck did this 'trend' come from? Is there a market for dog tags covered in technicolor ponies? Apparently so. I really tried to not want them (heck, I still don't really want them), but after a couple of Youtube reviews (Bins Toy Bin, I'm looking at you) something inside me snapped and the need to run to my nearest Walmart rushed into me. I still don't know exactly what happened, but here's what I ended up getting on my trip out.

So. The dog tags. I still don't really get it. I think I'm more excited about the vinyl decals that came with the package than I am about the plastic tags. The packs were $2.97 each and they came with a random dog tag, vinyl decal, tattoo set, and a checklist in case you want to collect everything in this series. I'm not sure if I will purchase any more of these, but I may try and track down the Discord option, as he is my favesies (hello, Q!). There are also Adventure Time dog tags, and a whole slew of other options so I guess this is a popular thing right now. Crazy kids these days.

I also stopped by the Dollar Tree and picked up some My Little Pony Series 2 Value Packs and some super retro (Seriously guys, I think this shit is from 1998) Pokemon tattoo sets. Why do they still have these available? I mean, it's super cool and you have NO IDEA how stoked I was to get classic Pokemon merch in 2013, but what the heck?

So that's what I picked up today. Thank you to YouTube for infiltrating my brain. I love you always.

An Odd Pairing.

I picked up this My Little Pony set while on a day trip in Asheville, NC. The Toys R Us was pretty sketch, but I was feeling the urge to buy something cute and plastic so I stopped in. They had a decent MLP selection, but since I don't have a Celestia figure I picked this one up! I'm not sure why they chose Pinky Pie to pair with the princess, but oh well.

The paint job is pretty good on these, and the colors on Celestia's wings are just gorgeous. They're almost frosted with a pale pink on the upper feathers.  There is blue tinsel woven into her mane, which is a pretty combination of lilac and ocean blue. Pinkie Pie is, well, your basic Pinkie Pie. Nothing special there. So yay, Celestia!

My Little Pony Toy Haul

While we were out thrifting today, we stopped by a local discount store to check out their toy section. Mostly because it was Saturday and we did NOT want to have to deal with crazy Walmart people on the weekend. I'm very glad that we did, because I found some adorable My Little Pony toys!

The sets that I ended up purchasing the "Elements of Harmony Friends" and "Cake Family Babysitting Fun" Character Collections. From what I can see through the packaging, the paint jobs look really good (something that had kept me from buying previous sets was the horrifically messy coloring). I really like the Elements of Harmony set because, Nightmare Moon (obviously), but there are some neat characters that you don't see often.

I also picked up some of the Neon Bright blind bags. I only picked up three (whyyyyyyy) and totally wish I had grabbed more. The coloring on these guys is incredibly cool! I like the gradient in the coloring, being more intense at the top of the figure. And I got Big Macintosh (my favorite), so that was a big win. Lemon Hearts looks a little fucked up, but I don't expect blind bags to look super amazing.
